Ukraine Orphanage Life
Currently there here are about 105,000 orphans residing in orphanages in Ukraine. Many of these children are older. Here are some statistics on the children and lives they have in orphanages:
Children Available for Adoption
It is believed there about 300 children from 7 years old and up to 10 years old that are available for adoption. There are about 450 children that are 7 years old and up that are part of sibling groups.
The total is about 750 children waiting to be adopted with the two category's combined.
There is estimated 1000 or more children from 11 to 13 years of age that are available for adoption. Typically these children remain in the system until they either leave the orphanages on their own or move on to a trade school where they can learn a trade.
Orphanages
The conditions in the orphanages varies. Orphanages that are sponsored by non profit organizations in Ukraine typically are in better conditions. Some are in very bad conditions due to no governmental or organization support.
Once a child is old enough to move into a trade school, the school will educate them, provide them with food and lodging and guide them to be able to "make" it on their own.
According to the laws in Ukraine, the government must provide for the orphans of Ukraine.
Special Needs Children
Many children are diagnosed as special needs from birth. These are the more obvious and easily recognizable special needs. Some children, if thought to have a special needs will have a medical check and it will be reported what the special needs is of the child.
Special needs can be considered to be the following:
- some disability of movement or development of the child
- some physical delays
- some mental delays
- some infantile cerebral paralysis of the child
- down syndrome children
There are many special needs children waiting. The SDA will often show all families coming to seek an adoption through Ukraine, all special needs children. The numbers are high. If you are interested in special needs or an older child placement please contact our office.
