Denise's family today. Emily is now 13 yrs. old.

From the Executive Director

As parents of three biological boys and unable, medically, to have additional children, we decided to adopt a girl. We looked into state and domestic adoption, but felt the need to adopt an infant as soon as possible. This decision led us to international adoption. I knew immediately that adopting a child from Russia would be the right thing to do, since my Grandparents are Russian and that would mean that we could provide our child with her inherited culture.

So the paperwork process began. Homestudy, reference letters, birth certificates, marriage certificates and immigration documentation was collected. We had to authenticate all of the documents for the foreign government. International adoption is an emotional roller coaster. Much paperwork was needed, as was much intervention with state, federal and foreign governments. We just wanted a daughter, but with Emily Kathryn-Ann, we got more than we bargained for. After completing my dossier on my own, with no assistance, and learning the Russian adoption laws and procedures, I began helping other families’ process their documentation. In doing this, I found the need to provide others with assistance in building their families through adoption.

In addition to finding our daughter, my husband Gary and I were alerted to the many needs of the children in our daughter’s orphanage who would be left behind. The many donations of toys, clothing and medical supplies was not enough. We needed to do more for the country that provided us with the most precious gift of all, our daughter, Emily Kathryn-Ann.

From wanting a daughter, to helping families with the adoption process and giving needy children a home, I implemented Building Blocks an adoption agency in Ohio. I have had many public relation jobs and finally I found the job that I enjoy. My trips overseas are filled with excitement, sadness and the need to work harder and to provide more assistance for the children left behind. These children need us even more then we need them. They are a true gift from God. The challenge of international adoption and overseas travel is more than worthwhile when you return home and see the end result.

Children are in need all over the world, and there are so many parents longing for a child to love. Because of this, Building Blocks and its staff have formed a one on one assistance agency that helps many families with bringing precious children into their homes.

I could go on explaining why I began Building Blocks, but there is not enough internet space to cover that explanation. But I can sum it up: The love for children. Children are our future.

While no agency is perfect, no child is perfect, and no situation is perfect, we can work together to bring a smile to a child's face or put clothing on a child's back.
